PPP dial-in configuration for the IOLAN+

Issue:
How do I configure a PPP dial-in connection on the IOLAN+ server.

Solution:

The IOLAN+ can support remote users dialing in using D.U.N. or other dial-up client that utilizes PPP protocol. The Iolan+ can use multiple authentication methods (though not as extensive as the Perle 833 Remote Access products).

Log into the unit.
Select 1 of the "free" conections.
Select Administration.
Select password then enter the units password

Select port enter the port number.

field values are slected by pressing the spacebar

fill-in the following fields as shown :
speed.......... [desired baud rate]
flowcontrol.....[Hardware]
input flow......[enabled]
output flow.....[enabled]
monitor dcd.....[yes]

dst-ip..........[client ip-address] - This address will be assigned to the dial in client. Note: the client IP-address must be on the same lan segment os the Iolan+ itself as it utilizes Proxy ARP.

access..........[Local]
authentication..[none], [local] or [host] - See below for details on Local or Host Authentication.
mode............[raw]
connection......[none]

Note: we suggest that you set port authentication to none for the initial configuration

press enter to save.

Configure the modems initialization string.

Main Menu -> Access -> Remote Site Devices

select the unused entry that corresponds to the port number that you are configuring. Define the suitable modem init string (refer to your modem vendor for details). example:

Modem
Config [AT&F1&C1&D2S0=1&W ]

press enter to save

Kill the port to apply the change.
use esc to withdraw through the menu structure.

Authentication methods

With Authentication = local the PPP client can use any UserID and the password will be set to the Iolan+'s Login password. The Login password is blank by default.

Main Menu -> Change -> Login Password

With Authentication = host you must configure a network server that can process the authentication request.

This requires that the authentication host configuration be completed by selecting ACCESS from the Configuration Main menu.
From the Access menu select Host Athentication and Logging.
In the next screen define the following
fields.
auth host [host ip address]
auth port [23]
log user name [ host user]
log file [name of a file]

The "auth port" above is using the Telnet Daemon running on a Unix host. If you are using an FTP Daemon then use "auth port" 21.

Then select the events that you wish to monitor. Leave all other fields at the default values.
Ensure that the log user that you define is a legitimate user on the authentication host.
