Downloading firmware through a serial connection

Issue:
How to perform a Service Download of firmware into an 833RAS through the serial ports.

Cause:

If you are upgrading from a version below 4.2 to the current or the unit cannot be accessed via an ethernet connection you will require this download method.

Solution:

The 833 Service Download Procedure will download new firmware into the 833RAS unit via the serial connection using a null modem cable.

ALL CONFIGURATIONS STORED IN THE UNIT WILL BE WIPED OUT AND THE UNIT IS RESET TO FACTORY DEFAULTS.

Service Down can only be performed in DOS. If you are running Win9x then restart in MSDOS mode, not a MSDOS prompt, or boot up the host with a DOS or Win9x Emergency Boot disk.

Note: MS-DOS boot disks cannot access an NTFS partion (which is the default for Windows 2000, or XP).

Install the Perle 833 RAS Manager on the Windows host.

1. Set up a direct connection to the Perle box.
Attach the NULL MODEM cable from your PC [that has the manager installed] to Port 1 on the Perle box.
2. Unplug the Perle box.
3. While holding down the [ESCAPE] and [down arrow] buttons plug the Perle box back in.
4. HOLD buttons for approximately 10 seconds then release.
5. After releasing buttons the LCD panel should show an asterisk cycling around.
This indicates the Perle box is ready for the Service Download. If its an old unit, the power lights will be cycling instead.

6. Change directory to the Perle Manager directory (default = c:\perle833)
7. Execute download: p833down.exe < *.dwn file > [-cn] [-sn]
The correct file will correspond with the type of unit you have. The download file is located in the download subdirectory (default = c:\perle833\download)
#of ports and LAN type e = ethernet t = token ring
-c represents the com port on the PC. DEFAULT is com1.
-s represents the baud rate flag. Setting n to 1 will establish a 9600 baud connection, setting n to 0 will use the DEFAULT 19200 baud.

e.g. 8 port ethernet using com1 on PC at 19600 baud
p833down.exe c:\perle833\download\8e_p833.dwn

8. The app will now scan for the Perle.
9. Down load progress will be displayed.
Make sure you do not get any retires during the process and have a 100% download. Otherwise try again.
10. Once completed the Perle will be reset to default settings.

If the Service Download does not find the Perle (the scan does not continue to the download) then check the cable or connection. Note that the Perle 833RAS is supplied with a Null Modem cable.
