Accessing AS/400 Applications From a Dial-in PC Using a Web Browser

Issue:
Accessing AS/400 Applications From a Dial-in PC Using a Web Browser

Solution:
A 1. What configurations have to be done on the AS/400 server?
First you should be running at least OS/400 Version 3, Release 2. Then you should configure TCP/IP and the 5250HTML Workstation Gateway.
A 2. How long it will take to configure the AS/400 server?
It takes about 15 minutes to configure the AS/400 server. Refer to Diagram A1 "5250 HTML Workstation Gateway Configuration" in the Perle technical document for complete details.
A 3. What do I need on the remote PC side to connect to the AS/400 database?
You have to deploy either our Perle RAS client or a PPP dialer (such as the Windows® 95 dialer, NT RAS dialer, OS/2 PPP dialer, etc) with TCP/IP protocol enabled and a browser.
A 4. How does the 5250 HTML Workstation Gateway work?
AS/400 applications are display-oriented. The 5250 HTML Workstation Gateway that is part of the Internet Connection for AS/400 servers, intercepts this display information and converts it to HTML. This is the standard format for any Web Browser. As a result, any web browser can understand AS/400 applications.
A 5. Is the 5250 HTML Workstation Gateway part of the HTTP server?
No. These are two different servers.
A 6. Can I transfer files from the AS/400 to my PC?
Yes, using an FTP program that is common with most TCP/IP stacks.
A 7. Is there an easier way to bill the dial-in clients based on their activity?
Yes. The event log file keeps track of the name, time and number of bytes sent and received. This information then can be imported into an Excel file format. This information can be used to calculate client billings.
A 8. What is involved in managing the Perle RAS unit?
Initially, you have to configure the Perle RAS. The only other time you will have to be involved with the Perle RAS is to add/remove users. This can be done either over a dial-in connection or through the corporate LAN.
A 9. Will I have to reboot or shutdown the Perle RAS unit every time that I am adding a new user?
No. You do not have to reboot or shutdown the Perle RAS unit.
A 10. Can I customize the HTML AS/400 screens?
Yes. You can add custom banners to the top and bottom of the screens. This gives you the opportunity to promote your company.
A 11. What other advantage does Call-back give me?
Security. You can pre-define the telephone numbers to be called back.
