General trouble shooting tips for the Affinity card

Solution:

A 1.	When using the Keyboard Remapper in Affinity Systems from Perle Client for Windows +, I am able to map a function (SystemRequest) to a keystroke (Alt + PrintScreen) successfully, but when I try to use this new sequence there is either no visable response or there is a Windows function performed. What am I doing wrong? Nothing. Unfortunately many of the standard 5250 functions performed on real terminals use keystrokes which are reserved by Windows to perform its own functions. The example mentioned (Alt + Print Screen to perform a 5250 System Request) is reserved by Windows to Cut the ACTIVE Windows to the Clipboard. You will need to select a keystroke which is not reserved by Windows.
A 2.	When using the Keyboard Remapper in Affinity Systems from Perle Client for Windows +, I am able to map a function (SystemRequest) to a keystroke (Alt + PrintScreen) successfully, but when I try to use this new sequence there is either no visable response or there is a Windows function performed. What am I doing wrong? 2. I installed my emulation card and when copying the driver to the hard drive I am prompted for a disk number 1, but I only have the Stepsaver Utility Disk. What disk do I need? Insert the Stepsaver Utility Disk when prompted, unless you plan to use Affinity Systems from Perle Client for Windows emulation software. If you are using the Affinity Systems from Perle Client for Windows software insert disk 1 of the Client for Windows when prompted.
A 3.	I installed my emulation card and when copying the driver to the hard drive, Windows 95 asks me to insert the driver diskette in drive A:, I do this but it never finds the driver. Is my diskette bad? No, chances are your diskette is not bad. Windows 95 OSR2 often has trouble locating the floppy disk. After the search attempt has failed once, choose ``Other Location" and key in the location of your disk drive. This will help Windows 95 find the proper location of your driver diskette.
A 4.	I installed a Plug `n Play card in my Windows 95 computer and rebooted, but it never detected new hardware after Windows 95 came back up. Did I do something wrong? Chances are you did NOT do anything wrong. In most cases when Windows 95 does not automatically detect the new device the problem is a matter of having available resources for the device. To check if you have available resources enter into the Device Manager (Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager) and double click on the entry labeled `Computer' at the very top of the device manager. This will list your available resources starting with the interrupt request. Look for any missing numbers between 00 and 15 on the list. If you do not have any numbers missing, you do not have an available interrupt request. Contact your computer vendor to have them make one available for you.
A 5.	I have run diagnostics on the card and am receiving memory errors. How do I attempt to correct the problem? One of the first things to check for if you are using Windows 95, is the ``himem" and ``emm386" lines in the config.sys. Start by booting or rebooting the PC. When you see the message `Starting Windows 95,' hit the F8 key. Choose ``Command Prompt Only." Hit the key. [NOTE: Do not exit to a DOS prompt from Windows 95.] Type in at the C: prompt edit(space)config.sys Look for a line that reads: device=c:\windows\himem.sys and/or device=c:\windows\emm386.exe noems x=... If either of these lines are present, type in rem(space) before the line. Save and exit.
A 6.	During installation I see the message, ``Enabler running," but my Enabler is not running. What is wrong? You may not have installed the software required for the emulation card. Check for the SET command. You can do this by typing at the C: prompt, SET. Look for the line SET(space)ENB5250=C:\AFFINITY or 5250CARD or points to the directory where your utilities were installed. If this lines is not present, verify that the statement is in the autoexec.bat. Type in at the C: prompt edit(space)config.sys Verify the line set(space)enb5250=c:\affinity or (whatever your directory name is) is located somewhere in this file. If it is not, type this line in prior to Windows being called (typically win). Save and exit. Reboot the PC.
A 7.	I can't get a connection to the AS/400 or S/36-38. What should I do? Run diagnostics on-line. First verify that your cabling is connected. Type in at the C : prompt cd(space)affinity or 5250card or (whatever your directory name is) Type in at the c:\affinity (or 5250card) prompt dia-pnp (for the plug and play card) or dia-ea (for the microplus twinax card or the standard emulation card) or dia-pcc (for the pcmcia or pc card) This will run the Enabler. After the Enabler you will be prompted to choose 1 of 3 options. Choose #1 - run the test once. It will then ask you if you want to run the test on-line. Choose yes. Also, please write down any error messages you may receive from running this test. If the PC has been upgraded from Windows 3.1/3.11 to Windows 95, check for 386 device drivers. Type in at the C: prompt cdwindows Type in at the c:\windows prompt editsystem.ini Go to the 386 enhanced section. Look for [386Enh] Look for: IbmDefaultTwinax=N and Devices=(either AFF, DCI, or CEM) 5250.386 The IbmDefaultTwinax=N must be there. If the Device=9either AFF, DCI, or CEM)5250.386 is present, delete it. This is the driver for Windows 3.1 or 3.11 and should not be present in Windows 95.
A 8.	How do I determine what resources the card is using? Run GETW95C. From Windows run GETW95C by choosing FILE, RUN and typing in c:\affinity\getw95c (or START, RUN in W95). Ensure all values match the expected, or configured values and the V86 segment is something other than 0.
Q 9.	The operating system on my PC is Windows 3.X and DOS. Is there anything special I need to do to make a connection? One of the first things to do after you do an installation is run the enabler. (C:\AFFINITY or DCICARD or 5250CARD\ENBSTART) or the GETW95C program to find out what resources the card is using. Write the resources down for future reference. In Win3.1/3.11 or DOS you must exclude the memory segment in the config.sys. Follow these instructions. Go to a DOS prompt. Type in at the C: prompt editconfig.sys Look for a line that reads device=c:\windows or doc\himem.sys and/or device=c:\windows or DOS\emm386.exe If either of these lines do not exist, put them in at the top of the config.sys. Please note that the himem line must be placed before the emm386.exe line and that both lines must match (either say DOS or WINDOWS). If both lines are present, you may have to edit the emm386.exe line by putting a (space)x=dc00-ddff (with the exclude parameter matching the physical memory segment the emulation card is using - per the enabler or getw95c program. Save and exit. Reboot the pc.
