P-Series Router ISDN dial-on demand ISP Configuration

Issue:
How do I configure an on demand internet connection ?

Solution:
Use IP Address Connect for Easy Connection to your ISP --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SUMMARY

The quickest and easiest way to configure the Perle router product line for connection to the Internet through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) on a dial-on-demand basis is by use of the IP Address Connect feature. An IP Address Connect connection is an ISDN connection that is established to a specific destination dependent upon the destination IP address contained within the IP traffic received from the local LAN.

This means that the Perle router continuously monitors IP traffic from the local LAN and makes ISDN connections to partner devices when IP traffic needs to be sent to remote LANs. Once the IP traffic is passed to the remote LAN and all sessions are closed, the Perle router will then disconnect the ISDN call and continue to monitor the local LAN for IP traffic.

Below are a few configuration examples to assist in the correct configuration of the IP Address Connect feature.

MORE INFORMATION

Configuration when using only a Single ISP If your Internet connection is through a single ISP, all IP traffic destined for the Internet would have to be routed through that particular site. The easiest way to accomplish this is to add an entry of "0.0.0.0" in the IP Address section of the Edit Address Connect Item menu, as well as the remote site alias that you have defined for the ISP site. This would ensure that whenever the Perle router encounters IP traffic for an unknown destination network, which will generally be the case when a session on the Internet is initiated, a connection to the ISP site will be established.

Note: If there are other entries that are to be entered in the IP Address Connect table, it is important that the "0.0.0.0" entry is the last entry in the table. This ensures that entries for other specific addresses are checked first and that the link to the ISP site is brought up only if no other matches are found.

Configuration when using Multiple ISPs If you have Internet access through more than one ISP, enter the IP address of the DNS (Domain Name Server) at each ISP site in the IP Address Connect table. This will ensure that IP traffic destined for a specific DNS will establish a connection with a particular ISP site.
