Issue:
What is required to add a feature card to a controller.

Cause:
The need for additional device support.

Solution:

Any 494E or 594E Perle controller is expandable to a maximum of 168 devices, the total number is bases on the number of open slots in the physical controller unit .
The 494T or 594T are none expandable, however a network card can be added to slot 3.
When adding additional twinax or ASCII  feature cards to a controller each feature card has to be individually address with a unique address, the address selected  for  the card should match the installing slot ,the chart below describes the switch setting.
Located on the twinax or Ascii feature card there is a four position DIP switch.
each feature card has an ID number, located on the face plate of the card.
Twinax feature cards can have 41,44 or 48.
The DIP switch for the address selection is located top centre of the Card id 48.
The DIP switch for the card id 41 and 44 are located at the top right.
The other feature card available is the Ascii card with an Id 42,switch location top right.

This table below identifies the slots and the switch setting for each slot.

 3  down  down  up  up
 4  up  up  down  up
 5  down   up  down  up
