Appendix A: Communicating with the AS/400 (checklist)

 STEP 1: Creating an NWI description

Use the CRTNWIFR command to create a Network Interface (NWI) description. Only one NWI description is required. Use default values unless otherwise specified.

 (1) Enter a name that you will use to identify and reference your NWI description.

(2) Enter the name of the communications port assigned by the AS/400 system. Use the

WRKHDWRSC *CMN command to determine the communication port’s Resource name.

(3) Enter *NO for the NRZI data encoding. This field must match the Perle 594E data encoding.

(4) Enter *V35 for the Physical Interface.

  1. Use the default value. However, if the Perle 594 is directly attached to the AS/400 (no modems),
  2. Specify the line speed to match the Perle 594E line speed.

  3. For a Frame Relay network, use the default value of *TE for the LMI mode. Configure the Perle 594 to

match the LMI mode type used by your Frame Relay network.

If you are using a leased line instead of a Frame Relay network, then enter *NONE for the LMI

mode and configure the Perle 594 for "NO LMI".

Press the ENTER key to save your configuration. You have now completed a NWI description on

the AS/400. To display your NWI description, use the DSPNWID command followed by the name of your

STEP 2: Creating a Frame Relay Line description

Use the CRTLINFR command to create a Frame Relay line description. Use default values unless otherwise specified.

  1) Enter a unique name that you will use to identify and reference your Frame Relay Line description.

(2) Enter the name assigned to your NWI description.

(3) Enter the unique Data Link Connection Identifier (DLCI) assigned to the link between the AS/400 and

the Frame Relay network.

If using a leased line instead of the services of a Frame Relay network, then configure this field with

any DLCI in the range of 1 - 1018 and also configure the same DLCI in the Perle 594 configuration.

(4) Enter a value that is equal to or greater than the total number of configured Perle 594 feature cards

including multisession controllers.

(5) No entry is required if you are using the default AS/400 SAP value of 04 in the Perle 594. However, if

you configured a different AS/400 SAP value in the Perle 594E, insert a "+" character for more values

and add the SAP value in the "Source Service Access Point" field in the SSAP List.

Press the ENTER key to save your configuration. You have now completed a Frame Relay Line description.

Repeat STEP 2 to create additional Frame-relay line descriptions only for the following reasons:

  • There are 2 or more Perle 594 controllers units that wish to communicate with the same AS/400 Frame Relay port.
  • For manageability, you wish to assign a different DLCI for IP Routing. Configure the Perle 594

IP DLCI Table for Discover = *NO, and enter the DLCI being used for IP routing and the IP Address of the AS/400 Frame-relay interface.

Vary on your NWI description and Frame Relay line description. Use the command WRKCFGSTS *NWI (followed by the name of your NWI description). For example, WRKCFGSTS *NWI FRNWI and press the Enter key. To vary on, enter 1 (Vary on) in the option field and press the Enter key. The attached line description will vary on automatically with the NWI.

If you wish to display your line description from the same menu, enter 8 (Work with description) in the option field next to the line description and press the Enter key, then enter 5 (Display) in the option field and press the Enter key.

  Note: To display additional entries such as the SSAP List, press the ENTER key again.

STEP 3: Creating an APPC controller description

Use the CRTCTLAPPC command to create an APPC controller description . Use default values unless otherwise specified.

(1) Enter a unique name that you will use to identify and reference your APPC controller description.

(2) Enter *FR for the Link Type.

(3) Enter the name of your Frame Relay Line description from STEP 2 of this document.

  1. Enter a unique name for the Remote control point. Configure the same Remote Control point name in the Perle 594 Network Information screen.

(5) The Exchange ID is optional. You may leave this field blank, or enter 07300000 for all APPC

controller descriptions.

(6) Enter a unique LAN DSAP. Values start at 04 and increment in multiples of 04. For example, 04, 08, 0C,

10, 14, 18, 1C… This field must match the Perle 594 controller card including multisession controllers.

  1. Leave the default LAN SSAP value of 04. This value will represent the AS/400 and will correspond with

the default value on the Perle controller.

 

Press the ENTER key to save your configuration. You have now completed a APPC controller description

on the AS/400. Repeat this step for each Perle 594 controller card and / or multisession controller.

Vary on your APPC controller description(s). Use the command WRKCFGSTS *CTL (followed by the name

of your controller description). For example, WRKCFGSTS *CTL FRAPPC1 and press the Enter key. To vary on, enter 1 (Vary on) in the option field and press the Enter key. If you wish to display your APPC controller description from the same menu, enter 8 (Work with description) in the option field and press the Enter key, then enter 5 (Display) in the option field and press the Enter key.

 STEP 4 Verifying the Mode descriptions (for SNA devices only)

It is recommended to use the IBM supplied mode descriptions on your AS/400. Use the mode QRMTWSC for Non-programmable Workstations (NWSs) and use the mode QPCSUPP for SNA Programmable Workstations (PWSs). Ensure that the Perle controller is configured for the mode name QRMTWSC in the Network Information screen. Note: The mode QPCSUPP is not a configurable option in the Perle 594. In fact, QPCSUPP is configurable in the SNA applications used by the SNA Programmable Workstations.

Verify the values used in your AS/400 mode descriptions as follows:

  1. Use the WRKMODD command followed by the name of the mode description. For example, WRKMODD QRMTWSC and WRKMODD QPCSUPP.
  2. Select option 5 from the menu to display the mode description.
  3. Compare each mode description with the recommended values shown in figure 4.1 for QRMTWSC and

If changes are required, press the F3 key to exit back to the previous menu and select option 2 to

make any required changes. Press the ENTER key to save any changes.

Both mode descriptions should already exist on the AS/400. However, if for any reason one does not

exist, create the mode description using the command CRTMODD, followed by the name of the mode

description and then press the F4 key and enter the appropriate values.

  STEP 5: Auto-creating the RWS controller and device descriptions

Enable the QAUTORMT system value on the AS/400 to automatically create RWS controller descriptions. To enable this option, use the WRKSYSVAL QAUTORMT command and set the system value to 1 (on). In addition to auto-creating the RWS controller(s), all attached NWS devices will also become automatically created.

Proceed to STEP 6.

 

STEP 6: Adding a TCP/IP interface (for IP Routing)

Use the ADDTCPIFC command to add a TCP/IP interface. Otherwise, Use default values unless otherwise specified. Before you add a TCP/IP interface, ensure the following:

  • Vary on the Network Interface (NWI) and Frame Relay line description.
  • Start the TCP/IP services using the following command: STRTCP.

 (1) Assign a unique IP address to your AS/400 TCP/IP interface.

(2) Enter the same name that was assigned to your Frame Relay line description in STEP 2.

(3) Enter the Subnet mask associated with the IP address of the AS/400 TCP/IP interface.

 

Press the ENTER key to save your configuration. You have now completed a TCP/IP interface entry.

Start the TCP/IP Interface as follows. Use the STRTCPIFC command followed by the IP address of the interface, or use the Go TCPADM command, select option 7 = Work with TCP/IP Network Status, select option 1 = Work with TCP/IP Interface Status, select option 9 = Start.

To display your TCP/IP interface, use the CFGTCP command then select option 1 - Work with TCP/IP interfaces. 

 STEP 7: Adding a TCP/IP Route (for static IP Routing)

Use the ADDTCPRTE command to add a TCP/IP route for all IP network destinations that are remote to the AS/400. Use default values unless otherwise specified. If the Perle 594 is configured for "dynamic IP routing" using RIP, skip STEP 7 and refer to Appendix A in this document.

 (1) Enter the Network ID of all IP network destinations that are remote to the AS/400.

(2) For each remote network destination, enter the associated Subnet mask.

(3) For the Next hop, enter the IP address of the Perle 594 Frame Relay Port.

  1. For the Preferred binding interface, enter the IP address of the AS/400 Frame Relay Interface assigned in STEP 6 of this document.

(5) Enter *IFC for the Maximum transmission unit

Press the ENTER key to save your configuration.

To display a TCP/IP route entry, use the CFGTCP command then select option 2 - Work with TCP/IP Routes.

 

Appendix A: Communicating with the AS/400 (checklist  )

 

  • For Native Frame Relay attachment, the AS/400 requires a I/O communications adapter that supports

a Frame Relay connection using card type 2666 or 2699 or 2720 or 2721 or 2745. Locate the card type in the AS/400 hardware resources. Type WRKHDWRSC *CMN.

  • Ensure that the latest available AS/400 Cumulative PTF package is installed for the specific release level of the AS/400. The supported release level is V3R1 and above.
  • Ensure that the TCP/IP services are active on the AS/400. Type STRTCP.
  • For IP applications such as the IP version of Client Access Express, you may need to start the DAEMON Host servers on the AS/400. Type STRHOSTSVR *ALL.
  • For IP Routing and/or LAN gateway configuration on the 594E, ensure that QAUTOVRT AS/400 system value is set high enough to auto-create virtual sessions for all attached IP and SNA Programmable Workstations. Type WRKSYSVAL QAUTOVRT.
  • Ensure that the Network Interface (NWI) description and Frame Relay Line description are varied on.
  • Ensure that the APPC controller(s) are varied on.
  • If you manually created the RWS controller(s), ensure that they are varied on.
  • For IP Routing, ensure that the TCP/IP Interface is active.
  • For IP Routing only. If using the AS/400 to route IP traffic to another LAN, ensure that the "IP

datagram forwarding" parameter in the AS/400 TCP/IP attributes is set to "Yes". Use the command

CHGTCPA followed by the F4 (function 4) key.

  • Dynamic IP routing using RIP is supported on the AS/400 V4R2 or above. To enable RIP V1 on the AS/400, start the ROUTED server as follows: STRTCPSVR * ROUTED. Next type the following command: CHGRTDA then press the F4 (function 4) key. Select "YES" for both the "Autostart" and "Supply" options. Press the Enter key. By default, the AS/400 provides RIP V1.
