PSeries router and Linkstream2000 over Frame-Relay

Issue:
How to configure the PSeries router to communicate with a Linkstream2000 over Frame Relay ?

Solution:


For better illustration, the following values were used in this example. 

Linkstream router location:
Linkstream LAN IP address 192.168.1.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Linkstream WAN IP address 172.19.1.1  subnet mask 255.255.0.0
Frame-Relay DLCI 51 provided by Frame-Relay network provider.

PSeries router location:
Pseries router LAN IP address 192.168.9.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0  (size 24 bits)
PSeries router WAN IP address 172.19.1.2 subnet mask 255.255.0.0  (size 16 bits)
Frame-Relay DLCI 16 provided by Frame-Relay network provider.

Linkstream Frame Relay Configuration example

Login with User name: manager and password: ......

From the Main menu, select the following menus options:

1. Configuration
4. Network Interface configuration
1. Ethernet Interface parameters

Configure the following parameters (leave all else as default). Use the arrow keys to navigate.

IP/ARP  Status: Enable
IP Address: 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask:   255.255.255.0
Accept:  Y for yes then press the Enter key

Press ctrl x to return to the Main Menu. Select the following menus options:

1. Configuration
2. Internet Protocol configuration
1. System Internet parameters

Configure the following parameters (leave all else at default values). Use the arrow keys to navigate.

Default Gateway: 172.19.1.2  (WAN ip address of the PSeries router)
Accept:  Y for yes then press the Enter key

Press ctrl x  to return to the Main Menu. Select the following menus options: 

1. Configuration
4. Network Interface configuration
5. Frame Relay LMI parameters

Configure the following parameters (leave all else at default values). Use the arrow keys to navigate.

Link No: Serial Link 0
Link Status: enabled
LMI Type:  ANSI  (lmi-type provided by your Frame network provider)
Accept: Y for yes then press the Enter key

Press ctrl x to return to the Main Menu. Select the following menu options:

1. Configuration
4. Network Interface configuration
6. Frame Relay LMI parameters

Configure the following parameters (leave all else at default values). Use the arrow keys to navigate.

Physical Link No: Serial Link 0
Logical Interface:  DLCI-1
Status: Enabled
DLCI Address: 16 (enter remote site DLCI provided by your Frame network provider)
Protocol: IP
IP Address: 172.19.1.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Accept: Y for yes then press the Enter key

Press ctrl x to return to the Main Menu. Select the following menu options:

1. Configuration
6. System Reboot

Warm start node: Y  Confirm: Y

PSeries Router configuration

Select the following menu options and configure only the parameters shown. Leave
all else at default values.

Login with default password 'BRIDGE' in upper case

Configuration menu
Interfaces set-up menu (skip this menu if it does not appear. Continue with LAN set-up menu)
LAN Set-up menu
IP set-up menu
IP Address '192.168.9.1'  Subnet mask size '24'

Press the TAB key twice. 

WAN set-up menu
Link set-up menu
Physical link type [1 or 2]  (You will only be prompted to enter the link number 1 or 2
when 2 WAN modules are installed)

Frame-Relay [enabled]
Frame relay set-up menu
Auto-learning [disabled]
LMI-type [ansi]   (lmi-type provided by your Frame network provider)

Press the TAB key twice.

Remote site set-up menu
Edit remote site menu

For the Remote site id or alias, enter a name to represent the remote site router. e.g.,  'linkstream'

For the Template id or alias, enter the word 'none'.

Primary Connection [Frame_relay]
Protocol set-up menu
IP Parameters menu
Link IP type  [numbered]
Local IP Address  '172.19.1.2'  Subnet mask size '16'
Peer IP Address   '172.19.1.1'  (WAN ip address of the Linkstream)

IP Routing menu
Routing protocol [none]
Auto Default Route [enabled]

Press the TAB key 3 times.

Connection set-up menu
Primary link [1 or 2]  (same value as the 'Physical link type' from above)
DLCI [51]  (enter remote site DLCI provided by your Frame network provider)
CIR [enter the CIR value provided by your Frame network provider]
PPP   [disabled]
State [enabled]

Press the = key to return to the Main menu. 

Save configuration
Diagnostics menu
Soft Reset 'yes' to reset device.
