AS/400 - SDLC configuration procedure

Issue:
How to create an AS/400 SDLC configuration for the 394 controller.

Solution:

Use the following procedure to configure the IBM AS/400 system for the Perle 394
remote workstation controller in an SNA/SDLC environment. The X.21 leased communications method is also included.
Contents
Step 1 - Creating an SDLC line description
Step 2 - Creating an RWS controller description

STEP 1: Use the CRTLINSDLC command to create an SDLC line description on the AS/400.
Refer to figure A. Use default values unless otherwise specified. NOTE: The same configurations and AS/400 commands apply if using the X.21 lease d line type on the Perle 394.

Create Line Desc (SDLC) (CRTLINSDLC)

Type choices, press Enter.

Figure A. (continued) Creating an SDLC Line description

(1) Enter a name that you will use to identify and reference your line description when working with the Vary Configuration (VRYCFG) and Work with Configuration status (WRKCFGSTS)commands.

(2) Enter the name of the communications port that is assigned by the AS/400 system. Use the WRKHDWRSC *CMN command to determine the communication port’s resource name.

(3) Enter (*PRI) for the Data Link Role.

(4) Enter the type of physical interface that the AS/400 communications adapter port and cable will be attached to. Configure the Perle 394 to use the same physical interface. For example, if specifying *RS232V24, use the RS-232D/V24 interface and cable on the Perle 394. If specifying*V35, use the V.35 interface and cable on the Perle 394. If specifying *X21, use the X.21 interface and cable on the Perle 394.

(5) Enter (*MP) for the Connection Type field.

(6) Enter *YES for NRZI or *NO for NRZ data encoding. Configure the Perle 394 to match the NRZI data encoding method. If using the IBM style configuration on the Perle 394, enter 0 for NRZI, or 1 for NRZ in field 3, sub-field 4.

(7) Enter a value that is equal to or greater than the total number of Perle 394 controller cards.
Press the ENTER key to save your configuration. You have now completed an SDLC line description on the AS/400. To display your line description, you can use the DSPLIND command followed by the name of your line description.

Refer to figure B for an example of an SDLC line description.

(1) Enter a name that you will use to identify and reference your controller description when working

with the Vary Configuration (VRYCFG) and Work with Configuration status (WRKCFGSTS) commands.

(2) Enter 5394 as the Controller type. Configure the Perle 394 for 5394 Controller Mode. If using

the IBM style configuration, enter 0 in field BB.

(3) Enter Controller model 1.

(4) Enter *SDLC for the Link Type field. Configure the Perle 394 to match the SDLC link type.

NOTE: If using the X.21 Physical Interface on both the AS/400 and Perle 394, continue to

specify *SDLC in the Link type field. However, configure the Perle 394 for *X21LL Line Type.

If using the IBM style configurator on the Perle 394, enter 0 for SDLC, or 3 for X.21 leased in

field AA.

(5) Enter the name which you used for your SDLC Line description.

(6) OPTIONAL: Leave this field blank; or enter 05F000 followed by the Perle 394 controller

address (same as Station address).

(7) Enter the Station address to match the Perle 394 controller address. If using the IBM style

configuration on the Perle 394, enter the controller address in field 2.

Press the ENTER key to save your configuration. You have now completed an RWS controller

description on the AS/400. Repeat this step for each controller card. To display your controller

description, you can use the DSPCTLD command followed by the name of your controller

description. Refer to figure D for an example of a controller description.
