P-Series routers: upgrading firmware via serial console port.

Issue:
How to upgrade router firmware via serial console port.

Solution:

The firmware upgrade for the Perle Series routers comes in 2 parts. You must upgrade the Boot code first, followed by the System code.  The Boot code has a "B" in the file name (ie., 52B1511) and the System software will have a "P" or "V" in the file name (ie., 52V8600 or 52P660).

Attach the serial cable between the console port of the Perle Series router and the COM port of your Windows PC. On your Windows PC, start the Hyperterminal program and configure Hyperterminal for the correct COM port on your PC, followed by 9600 baud, 8 bits, 1 stop, no parity, Xon/Xoff flow control.

Power on the Perle Series router and login. Select the following menu options:

Configuration
Access set-up
Load flash set-up
Console (ZMODEM)

Enter "Yes" to load through serial port.

You will see the following:

Testing hardware
Testing EEPROM... ... Successful
Testing FLASH ... ... Successful
Testing DRAM ... ... Successful
Initializing Hardware......
Reset to ZMODEM mode ...

System startup
Receiving ZMODEM ... 5 ctrl-x's to abort

The Perle Series router is ready to receive the Boot code.  From your Hyperterminal program, select the "Transfer" function followed by "Send File".

In the Send File menu, use the Browse button to specify the path to the Boot code file.

Click the "Send" button to begin the transfer.

You can watch the stats to determine how near you are to completion.

When the Boot code has successfully downloaded, the Perle router will display the following:

Programming FLASH | LOGIN MENU Programming FLASH /
Verifying FLASH
FLASH programming complete.
Resetting to Operational mode.
Programming successful
Testing hardware
Testing EEPROM... ... Successful
Testing FLASH ... ... Successful
Testing DRAM ... ... Successful
Initializing Hardware......
Initializing Software......

 Running in OPERATIONAL mode.

Press the Enter key. The following will appear:
